Most fans don’t much about Shang-Chi, but expect that to change.

Now 2013 Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton is joining the MCU as THR reports that Cretton has signed on to direct the Shang-Chi movie, which will mark the studio’s first superhero film with an Asian lead.

Word of the project first surfaced in December, along with the news that Marvel was fast-tracking it and had tapped Dave Callaham (Wonder Woman 1984) to write the screenplay.

At the time, it was reported that Marvel was looking towards Black Panther as the model, and in that regard was aiming to hire an Asian or Asian-American director.

The Shang-Chi character was created in the early 1970s by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin after Marvel Comics was not able to secure the rights to the TV series Kung Fu, only acquiring the rights to the villain Fu Manchu and created Shang-Chi as a son of Fu Manchu.

In the comics, Shang-Chi was raised and trained by his father in martial arts, but when he learned his father was actually evil, he tuned against him.

Fans can expect an Asian version of Black Panther as far as cast and sentiment. Steven Yeun has quickly emerged as the fan favorite for the titular role.

Cretton is currently directing an adaptation of the devastating book Just Mercy, which is about the U.S. justice system. Marvel alum Michael B. Jordan leads a cast that also includes Brie Larson. Cretton most recently directed Larson in the 2017 drama The Glass Castle.

Speaking of Brie Larson, let’s talk Captain Marvel

Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson) took time with Collider to discuss the film, beginning with the de-aging process.

“There’s not much going on, on the day. You look like yourself with some dots and more hair, both of us. Hilarious thing was his dots were white and my dots were black, which I thought was very like ebony and ivory. Yet, that’s it. And we’re kind of looking at each other, grizzled veterans that we are, and going, ‘Oh, s**t. We’re younger. We’re younger. I gotta remember to act that.’ So sometimes I’d kind of feel like I let a little old, grizzled, traumatized, beat up Phil Coulson slip into it, and I’d be like, ‘Wait, wait, whoa, whoa. Let me start over.’ Because this is a guy who isn’t even really sure what exactly he signed up for yet. He just knows that this guy Fury is cool, and he wants to learn from him I feel like it’s the moment when he’s realizing, ‘oh this is exactly where I’m supposed to be. This is my destiny, is to be part of this, and to work with this guy.’ That’s the process of this movie, which I think is a cool moment in anyone’s life.”

Despite his activity as Coulson on Agents of SHIELD, he was “psyched” about returning to the MCU. before sharing a funny “black eye” story. Check out the full interview, and yes, he talks about the new season of SHIELD, directing and much more, click HERE

The film opens April 26, 2019 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Don Cheadle, Karen Gillan, and Brie Larson.

Here’s the official synopsis for Avengers: Endgame:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Endgame trailer notes

This really sets the tone for the film, wrapping up old stories and the films which started with Iron Man. Fans get a look at the characters at their painful places in the wake of Thanos’ victory and cool teases, like Rocket and War Machine.

Of course, the arrival of Captain Marvel will be key, as teased with the Captain Marvel post-credit scene and fans are excited about the new white Avengers uniforms. Stay tuned.
