Marvel exec gives ‘Ant-Man’ update, Edgar Wright, Paul Rudd, Thanos

ant_man_marvel_premier_48_dave_cockrum_1979_marvel_comics_original_comic_art_cover_prelim_sketchMarvel just keeps kranking out great films, with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” being the latest, and looks ahead, beyond the next “Avengers” film with “Ant-Man” in 2015. Marvel Studios Exec Kevin Feige explains how this character fits in and changes the MCU, as well as, what the impact of director Edgar Wright has had on the Marvel franchise.

Speaking with Empire, Feige says the “Ant-Man” factor dates back to the beginning of the Marvel films.

“We changed, frankly some of the MCU to accommodate this version of Ant-Man. Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with “Ant-Man,” going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for “Avengers” the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to “Avengers.’”

Feige then explained the appeal of casting Paul Rudd and what fans can expect from this version of Ant-Man.

“Look at that origin of the petty crook who comes into contact with a suit and does his best to make good, and then look at someone like Paul Rudd, who can do slightly unsavoury things like break into people’s houses and still be charming and who you root for and whose redemption you will find satisfaction in.”

As with all of their films, the emphasis is the character: “It was two things – a story Edgar wanted to tell that we’ll see with Michael Douglas and Paul Rudd, and now we’re 11 films in, it’s looking at the characters we’ve already introduced who already have the technology and the brains to do…certain things [Laughs].”

While Feige confirms Thanos in motion capture, he only adds “There is an actor. I’m not sure we want to announce it yet.” More on that here.

Rudd stars with Michael Douglas, Patrick Wilson, Matt Gerald and Evangeline Lilly, Ant-Man will arrive in theaters July 31, 2015.
