Martin Freeman, Steven Moffat on ‘Sherlock’ season 4: ‘surprises’ ‘bit darker’
Martin Freeman sat down with interviewers to discuss the highly-anticipated fourth season of the popular series, Sherlock. While he did not give away any spoilers, the actor confirmed that the new season would be sure to hold plenty of twists, turns, and surprises for viewers, in true Sherlock Holmes fashion.
“It’s going to be full of surprises for you, and for us and for everybody. I think we just know to expect the unexpected now . . . The plans they have got for the overarching series – oh man, it’s just so exciting!” the Hobbit star told BBC Radio Wales.
The show’s creator, Steven Moffat, has also suggested that the new season will be keeping fans on the edge of their seats – as well as playing with their emotions. Moffat says the next installments would be a bit darker and would seriously shake things up. When asked how he would manage to top the previous seasons, Moffat stated, “We have a plan to top it — and actually I do think our plan is devastating.”
According to the BBC, the show will have a 2016 air date, keeping to the pattern of releasing a season every two years. In addition to a tentative 2016 release date, the BBC revealed that there will be a one episode special prior to the fourth season.
Moffat has hinted at “devastating” events of season 4, which many fans perceive as a hint that Mrs. Hudson may perish. “…I do think our plan is devastating. We’ve practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan … we’re probably more excited that we’ve ever been about Sherlock.”
Fans are still scratching their heads over the cliffhanger season 3 ending. Moriarty is dead. “He can’t come back from that,” Moffat said. “He shot himself in the face. What more do you want?”
In an interview with Vulture, actress Amanda Abbington revealed what kind of parents John and Mary would be.”On the one hand, they’d probably be reckless because they’re both quite psychopathic,” said Abbington. “But I think an assassin and an army doctor who loves trouble, I mean, that kid has got nothing to worry about. Screwed up mentally, of course, but if there’s any bullying on the playground, we’re covered.”
