Major 7.1-magnitude earthquake reported off the coast of Indonesia, no tsunami warning issued
A major 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Maluku islands Monday (Tuesday morning Indonesia time), according to the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS).
The USGS says the quake struck offshore with the epicenter 147 miles (236 kilometers) northwest of the city of Saumlaki. The quake was reported at a depth of 96 miles (155 kilometers).
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it was not issuing a tsunami warning because the quake was too deep in the Banda Sea.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
