Maine reports Cyclospora cluster, first cases since 2010

The Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported four cases of cyclosporiasis in the state in recent weeks. The cases were reported to Maine CDC from June 24-July 7th. The last known case reported in a Maine resident was in 2010, however cyclosporiasis is not a reportable condition in Maine.  Tests are pending on two symptomatic contacts of one case.  Onsets of illness for three cases occurred from May 27th – June 15th. It is not clear where the four individuals contracted the parasitic infection.

Despite cyclosporiasis not being a reportable condition in Maine, due to large numbers of cases in the United States in 2013, Maine CDC is requesting providers report cyclosporiasis cases as an unusual condition, since it is not commonly seen in Maine residents.

In 2013, some 631 cases of the protozoan parasite were reported from 25 states and New York City. Forty-nine people required hospitalization for their illness and no deaths were reported. Looking for a job in health care? Check here to see what’s available
