Maine reports a dozen gonorrhea cases to start 2013
Following the large increase in cases of the sexually transmitted infection in 2012, the Maine Centers for Disease Control has reported that 12 cases have already been reported in the first 12 days of the year, according to a Maine CDC gonorrhea update Thursday.
The total of 12 cases reported from Jan. 1 to Jan. 12 is still lower than the 21 cases reported during the same time frame in 2012, but more than the two cases reported in 2011.
Androscoggin and Cumberland Counties have reported the most cases with five and three cases, respectively.
In 2012, Maine reported 456 confirmed cases of gonorrhea, which represented a nearly 60 percent increase from 2011.
