The body found on Weeks Mills Road on Aug. 23 while authorities were investigating a missing persons case was indeed identified Friday as Elizabeth A. Munster.
Munster, 37, was reported missing on Aug. 2.
“I understand that this investigation has taken a bit longer than originally anticipated, however, your patience has been greatly appreciated as it has allowed the involved agencies to complete a thorough investigation,” Deputy Chief Kevin Lully said.
The woman add been missing since July 31, last seen around 5 p.m. in the vicinity of North Street.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has not released an official cause of death, and the investigation remains open, according to Lully.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit van was at the scene: near the intersection with North Belfast Avenue, also called Route 3, in the northeast section of the city.
The heavily wooded area was taped off closest to the road.
Augusta police said there is no threat to the public at this time.
“Although the Medical Examiner’s Office has not confirmed the exact cause of death,” Lully said, “as a result of our investigation, we do feel comfortable letting the community know that you do not need to be in fear for the safety of yourselves or your families.”
