Madonna, ‘The Boss’ top 2012 concert tour ticket sales
The “Material Girl’s” MDNA Tour topped all concert tours worldwide in ticket receipts in 2012, according to the concert industry’s leading business trade publication, Pollstar Friday.
Madonna raked in $296.1 million in gross receipts during her 88-show world tour. She was followed Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, who who brought in more than $ 210 million during 81 show/66 city tour.
“The elder statesmen of the music world, while no longer topping the charts or scoring radio hits, are doing well because their older audiences can afford to pay higher ticket prices”, Gary Bongiovanni, Pollstar editor, told Reuters.
Rounding out the top 5 were the genius behind “The Wall”, Pink Floyd founder, Roger Waters at $186 million in 72 shows, Coldplay at more than $171 million in 67 shows and Lady Gaga, who brought in more than $161 million from 80 shows.
Cirque Du Soleil’s tribute to late King of Pop Michael Jackson came in at #6, the Country Music duo of Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw placed seventh, followed by headbangers Metallica at #8, Elton John at #9 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers rounding out the top 10.
