Liz Cheney drops out of Wyoming senate race noting ‘serious health issues’ in family
They VP’s daughter Liz Cheney has officially dropped out of the Wyoming senate race and her attempt to replace incumbent Mike Enzi.
“Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign,” she said. “My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and their health and well-being will always be my overriding priority. … Though this campaign stops today, my commitment to keep fighting with you and your families for the fundamental values that have made this nation and Wyoming great will never stop.”
Cheney, age 47, began telling associates of her decision over the weekend, CNN reported Sunday night.
“Though this campaign stops today, my commitment to keep fighting with you and your families for the fundamental values that have made this nation and Wyoming great will never stop,” she added.
Cheney, who has worked for Fox News as a political commentator, announced that she would run against Enzi this past July, raising the prospect of a rare primary contest among Wyoming Republicans.
Enzi, who was easily elected to a third Senate term in 2008, had the support of much of the state’s political establishment, as well as the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Cheney had also struggled to mount a formidable campaign against the incumbent senator, and polls had shown her far behind.
