Graham, clearly the most well known politician in the very red state, is showing some weaknesses when the 2014 election is looked at as a whole.

First, Graham garnered only 53% favorability rating among likely Republican voters. One out of three Republicans polled give him an unfavorable rating.

In addition, as Clemson political science professor Dave Woodard points out, “Republican primaries regularly attract about 20 percent of the registered voters, and they are more conservative and more ideological than voters in the general election. It often happens that popular incumbents are derailed on the way to re-election by upstart challengers in GOP primaries.”

Graham currently has three conservative opponents to battle in the upcoming primary, State Sen. Lee Bright, Nancy Mace and businessman Richard Cash, all who may be more palatable to more conservative voters.

The conservative grassroots are also out in force to ensure Graham is knocked out of office, saying Graham is “not-so-conservative”.

Only 30% of Republicans said they will vote for Graham regardless, while 20% say they would not vote for him in 2014.
