Lincoln, Ontario hotel pool closed because of Giardia– cleared to reopen

The pool at the Beacon Harbourside Inn in Lincoln, Ontario has now reopened after a nearly two month closure when dozens were infected by the protozoal parasite, Giardia lamblia, according to a Niagara This Week report today.

The hotel pool was officially closed on Jan. 8 after a Giardia outbreak was linked to the pool.

Since then, a total of 75 cases of giardiasis — 64 of them primary and 11 secondary cases.

“We are confident it was pool fouling,” said Bill Hunter, manager of environmental health, noting the source was likely a child. “With most gastrointestinal parasites, you clear the pool and the chlorination takes care of it quickly.”

However, chlorine is generally ineffective against Giardia cysts and other methods of sterilization need to be implemented.

Giardiasis is an infection of the small intestine caused by a tiny parasite called Giardia lamblia (intestinalis).

The time between infection and symptoms is 7 – 14 days. Symptoms include diarrhea, loose, mucousy, pale, greasy stool, stomach cramps, bloating, severe gas, weight loss, tiredness and dehydration.

Some people with Giardia have no symptoms, or are asymptomatic.

The parasite lives in soil, food, and water. It may also be found on surfaces that have come into contact with animal or human waste.

You may become infected if you:

•Are exposed to a family member with giardiasis

•Drink water from lakes or streams where animals such as beavers and muskrats, or domestic animals such as sheep, have left their waste

•Eat raw or undercooked food that has been contaminated

•Have direct person-to-person contact in day care centers, long-term care homes, or nursing homes

•Have unprotected anal sex

Travelers are at risk for giardiasis throughout the world. Campers and hikers are at risk if they drink untreated water from streams and lakes.
