Liberal Fascism: Ev Williams says Internet broken, apologizes for Twitter role in Trump win

In a report published by The New York Times, Twitter co-founder Ev Williams says that “the internet is broken,” and that if Twitter is responsible for President Trump’s election in November, he’s “sorry.” He added that he was wrong trying to “improve the world by giving people a voice.”

The report takes a look at Williams’ career, his current work with Medium, and his efforts to fix what he sees as an internet that is going off the rails.

“It’s a very bad thing, Twitter’s role in that,” Williams said of Twitter being used for Trump’s victory. “I think the internet is broken,” he says, believing this for a few years, actually. But things are getting worse. “And it’s a lot more obvious to a lot of people that it’s broken.”

“I thought once everybody could speak freely and exchange information and ideas, the world is automatically going to be a better place,” Williams says. “I was wrong about that.”

Williams spoke to the graduating class at the University of Nebraska last month.

Williams likened the tech industry’s desire to “democratize” everything (i.e. put technology into the hands of everyone, instead in the hands of select few), to the Greek myth of Prometheus stealing fire the gods and giving it to humans.

“What we tend to forget is that Zeus was so pissed at Prometheus that he chained him to a rock so eagles could peck out his guts for eternity,” Williams joked during the speech. “Some would say that’s what we deserve for giving the power of tweets to Donald Trump.”

It got a big laugh and then he confessed, “I was nervous about that joke in Nebraska.”

There is no outspoken remarks by Williams against President Obama and the use of social media, especially Twitter, to win in 2008 or 2012. Williams stopped short of a call for censoring a voice like Trump, particularly during a campaign, but don’t be surprised if that is something pursued in the future.
