Letter to the Editor: HIV-infected women released from jail have worse HIV treatment outcomes than men, according to Yale study

In response to an interview I had with the lead author of the study, “Gender Disparities in HIV Treatment Outcomes Following Release From Jail: Results From a Multicenter Study”, Jaimie P. Meyer, MD, Yale University School of Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases, AIDS Program, I received the following Letter to the Editor:

Dear Editor,

In the article, “HIV-infected women released from jail have worse HIV treatment outcomes than men, according to Yale study” published on January 30, 2014, it seems that preventing the spread of HIV in incarcerated women becomes an institutional issue—one that should be addressed in prison rather than after individuals leave. While Meyer mentions the factors contributing to this are “women are more likely to be homeless, ongoing cocaine use and ongoing depression,” I often wonder whether the disparities between men and women in prison who have HIV come from the long-withstanding association of this virus with men. I think the question of why women are less successful in treatment should then become, why are there fewer HIV-preventative and treatment education efforts geared towards women in prison when the risk of infection is equally likely in both males and females? What kind of restorative justice measures can we enforce so that people in prison do not leave in a more vulnerable state than which they entered prison?

Sincerely,

Kanika
