Kali Hardig’s condition continues to improve, expected to leave ICU tomorrow

The miraculous story of 12-year-old, Benton, Arkansas girl, Kali Hardig continues as the latest Facebook posting from her mother, Traci, indicates she’ll be leaving intensive care tomorrow.

“Kali is doing a great job! She gave her mom a hug today! Tomorrow we are moving out of PICU! Pray for us!!!!”

More than two weeks ago, Kali was diagnosed with parasitic meningitis, an extremely lethal infection caused by the free-living amoeba, Naegleria fowleri.

Why do I call Kali’s recovery miraculous?

With over 120 well documented cases of primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), the disease caused by N. fowleri, in the past 50 years in the United States, the fatality rate is well over 99 percent.

In fact, prior to Kali, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the only known survivors include a patient from California in 1978 and a patient from Mexico in 2003.

And in a California survivor’s case, laboratory experiments suggest that particular strain may have been less virulent, or deadly.
