Johnny Depp may be set to star in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ film
Marvel Studios continues to seek out big names to headline their next phase of films. Michael Douglas joins Paul Rudd of Ant-Man and now Johnny Depp is rumored to be of interest.
Latino Review claims that Marvel has met with Johnny Depp over the title role in their forthcoming Doctor Strange adaptation.
Strange is a highly skilled sorcerer, the primary protector of Earth against magical villains, and has already been confirmed by Kevin Feige as being the next character on his Marvel hit-list.
According to the report, Depp is a big fan of the comicbooks, and it is thought his good relationship with Disney could help things along towards an agreement.
This seems like a no-brainer for Depp to recharge his resume after the failed film The Lone Ranger.
“What I can say is that Strange is being groomed to be the next Iron Man. The studio needs a new ‘hub’ character going into Phase 3 and beyond, as there is audience fatigue, aging stars and a need to move from Tony Stark/Iron Man as a ‘hub’ for films,” Feige said previously.
That said, the same site linked Joseph Gordon-Levitt to the role last year, with the report conceding that some script alterations would need to be made to accommodate the significantly older Depp into the role.
Whether or not this proves to be hot air remains to be seen, but on the face of it, Depp would seem a reasonable fit for the part. Could there be another Michael Douglas-sized bombshell on the near horizon? We’ll have to wait and see…
