John McCain won’t retire, will seek reelection in 2016
Sen. John McCain announced that he will run for re-election in 2016, confirming a move that has been both widely expected and open to criticism, especially from those who support term limits.
McCain, who will turn 80, will to extend his tenure which began in 1987.
At the Arizona Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Phoenix, McCain said “With a full heart, I ask Arizonans again for their support as I seek re-election to the United States Senate. I’m as determined as ever to deserve your trust and grateful as ever for the privilege.”
The five-term senator became chairman of the Armed Services Committee this year and has remained active in support of the military and involved in U.S. foreign affairs.
“I work 16-hour days. Look at what I’ve done for Arizona and America,” he told the press. “Make your own judgment.”
There is no word on a GOP opposition to the moderate Senator, who lost to President Obama in 2008 for election to the White House.
Sen. Jeff Flake moved from the House to win the seat being vacated by Jon Kyl over Richard Carmona of Tucson, who was the Democratic candidate.
McCain is a former Navy pilot who was shot down over what then was North Vietnam in 1967. He was held as a prisoner of war for nearly six years and has described a series of tortures he underwent. He was freed in 1973, the same year that the U.S. military wound down its involvement in the war.
