Arizona Senator John McCain had a lot to say about America’s role in the situation in Syria this week frequently criticizing the man who beat him for the White House in 2008.

On Monday, McCain called again for US military action against Syria’s al-Assad regime in a speech at a Washington think tank, the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute.

The war veteran and Republican hawk cited reports of Assad’s use of more powerful military hardware like attack helicopters and tanks which are now being used against Syrian rebels.

In fact, the Senator said it is “shameful” that America is standing on the sidelines in Syria as people are being massacred. In addition, he sharply criticized President Barack Obama for not speaking out on the subject.

McCain told host David Gregory on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, “The most responsible course first is for the president to stand up and speak for these people,” said McCain. “When’s the last time the president of the United States spoke out and said these people deserve our moral support?”

McCain also said that Russia and Iran continue to supply Syria with arms citing the same allegations Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did previously.

What is McCain’s vision of America’s role in Syria?

“The US action I envision would not be unilateral; it would be multilateral. We would work closely with Arab and European allies, especially Turkey and our partners in the Gulf,” he said.

“As in Libya, there would be no boots on the ground, and we would only intervene at the request of legitimate representatives of the Syrian people.”
