Jim Gilmore excluded from CNN debate despite performing better than George Pataki

While CNN finalized the candidates for the GOP Presidential debate this week, Jim Gilmore didn’t get an invite, as the “former Virginia governor met the 1 percent voter-support threshold in just one of the three polls that CNN used to determine the field for the debates.”

According to the latest YouGov polls, Gilmore is at 1% in Iowa, a small step ahead of George Pataki who was at 0% in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Lindsey Graham is garnering a big 0% in polls, except his home state of South Carolina, where he is at 5%. Rick Perry was even with Pataki, but has since dropped out the race.

“CNN’s decision to keep me, and only me, out of the Reagan Library debate is an attempt to muzzle someone who forcefully opposes the candidates preferred by CNN and by the Republican leadership,” Gilmore, the former governor of Virginia, said in a statement Friday.

The prime-time 8 p.m. debate on September 16th will include Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, Marco Rubio, Scott Walker, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul and Carly Fiorina. Rick Santorum,  Graham, Bobby Jindal and Pataki will participate in the 6pm debate.

“RealClearPolitics, which aggregates polls, doesn’t even include Mr. Gilmore on its polling data for the Republican race, though it does count 15 other candidates, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.), both of whom currently average less than one percent support in overall national polls,” notes the WSJ, covering Gilmore’s appearance against the Iranian nuke deal.

“But that doesn’t prevent Mr. Gilmore from being confident in his ability to win the Republican nomination and even the presidency. In an interview prior to Wednesday’s rally against the Iran deal, Mr. Gilmore said his rally speech would address “what I’ll do when – if – I become president….,” their coverage quoted.

Gilmore’s campaign his criticized Republican Congressional leadership for “botching” the effort to block the Iran Deal and called for the resignations of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner.

Gimore challenged Donald Trump to a “mano a mano” debate on the topic of birthright citizenship, which Trump wants to end – a stance Gilmore said undermines the Constitution. He also criticized Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s views on birthright citizenship, which Gilmore said is “a dangerous step that undermines American liberty.”
