Jeremy Jordan talks ‘Supergirl’ and the Winslow Schott ‘Fanboy’ role

Another adaptations of a DC Comic characters can be seen this fall as CBS is finally entering the realm of comic book heroes with the premiere of Supergirl. From Greg Berlanti (Arrow, Flash) and Ali Adler (Chuck, No Ordinary Family), Supergirl will focus on twenty-something Kryptonian Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) as she comes to terms with her powers in modern times. Jeremy Jordan plays Winslow “Winn” Schott, a character in the comics known as the villain Toyman, but Jordan says Supergirl’s version of the character is the audience stand-in and “fanboy.”

ComicBook.com attended a roundtable interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego this year, where Jordan discussed the differences between his version of Winn and the comic book character. Jordan explained that the show will be reinventing many of the DC characters that fans know from the comics, but predicted Winn will likely turn down a villainous path at some point: “I can’t imagine, having named him that, that he’s not going to get to a darker place eventually, but right now, he’s fun, excitable, youthful, really happy and sort of silly and quirky and young and in love with Kara even though she doesn’t like him like that (but it’s okay, they’re still friends).”

Winn is described as a tech expert who works with Kara at Cat Grant’s CatCo.

Once set on her path to becoming Supergirl, Kara quickly tells Winn about her superpowers and he helps her develop her signature costume. The character will also act as an audience surrogate, which Jordan said he was excited to play.

“When I read the pilot, I was the audience member at that point and I was like, ‘Well, this is the character I relate to, because I feel like him. I feel like that’s me watching the show, experiencing these sort of fanboy moments for the first time.’ And I’m really excited to be that character that people can sort of relate to, at least at first.”

Jordan talked about quickly hitting it off with his costar, Benoist, and hoped it reflects in their characters’ on screen dynamic. When asked about his and Benoist’s musical talents potentially being incorporated in the show, Jordan said they likely won’t, at least for the time being.

The series will also bring to life other DC Comics characters like Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) and Lucy Lane (Jenna Dewan-Tatum).

Winn’s evolution into Toyman may be a long process, like The Flash’s evolution of Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) into Caitlin’s comic book alter-ego as Killer Frost or Cisco as the DC character Vibe.

Helen Slater and Dean Cain also have undisclosed roles.

Supergirl premieres on October 26, 2015.
