Jennifer Rubin, a neocon herself, doesn’t recognize her own kind as she blasts Rand Paul

You may be asking, who is Jennifer Rubin? Well, let me start there.

Rubin is considered a neoconservative “columnist” who writes what she considers, “insightful” pieces for neoconservative rags like The Weekly Standard, Commentary and now does a column for the Washington Post called Right Turn.

In a “Right Turn” column Monday, Rubin blasts Kentucky Senator Rand Paul for a tweet he sent this morning:

Rubin says of Paul, “Let’s start with his use of the term “neoconservative.” I’d like to understand to whom he is referring. President Obama? Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry? They all supported aid to the Egyptian government. Both houses of Congress, maybe? Right now it is the president who is rebuffing calls to cut off aid. Mr. Obama is many things, but a neoconservative he is not.”

Really Jennifer?

The late, liberal journalist, Michael Hastings certainly thought Mr. Obama had “neoconservative tendencies”.

Speaking a couple of months ago on MSNBCs “UP with Steve Kornacki”, Hastings said the following about the President and his national security speech:

“If you compare this speech to the speech he gave in Cairo, in 2009 or his Nobel Prize speech, you see almost a total rejection of the civil rights tradition that President Obama supposedly came out of… and just an embrace of total militarism,” Hastings said.

“That speech to me was essentially agreeing with President Bush and Vice President Cheney that we’re in this neo-conservative paradigm, that we’re at war with a jihadist threat that actually is not a nuisance but the most important threat we’re facing today,” Hastings continued.

Former Salon writer and The Guardian investigative reporter, Glenn Greenwald also looks at Obama as in a neoconservative light.

An article in Forbes, not a liberal bastian, two years ago called out Obama on his neoconservatism concerning Libya. Former Sec. Clinton was showered with praise over the years by the like of The Weekly Standard.

Even the Berkeley Political Review, I don’t imagine they take too many digs at Mr. Obama, said, “Obama has steadfastly accelerated the influence of neo-conservative ideology in his foreign policy.”

John Kerry totally supported the Libya invasion. He even said on Meet the Press in March 2011, “I would not call it going to war. This is a very limited operation that is geared to save lives, and it was specifically targeted on a humanitarian basis.”

Jennifer and John, flinging missiles is not “going to war”?

If it happened here, it would certainly be considered war.

The list could go on and on, so yes Ms. Rubin, those three can certainly be considered neoconservatives.

Then Rubin says, “Besides, he’s [Paul] dead wrong. Numerous conservative critics of the president (who favor a strong national security policy) have called for a cessation of aid. These include Sen. John McCain (R-Ky.), Robert Kagan, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) and a slew of others. Indeed, on this the issue cuts across ideological and party lines.

Has Jennifer looked at her comrades at Commentary?

Columnist, Johnathan Tobin, an American neocon, certainly sounds like he supports giving aid to Egypt:

“But such a cutoff or threats to that effect would be a terrible mistake….Fortunately, the first reactions out of the White House now indicate that it won’t cut off aid.”

How about Max Boot?   Well yea, he wants to also:

“The U.S. has limited leverage but the $1.5 billion in aid we provide annually does give us some influence, and we need to use it to press for return to civilian rule, the promulgation of a new constitution, and the holding of elections. Egypt is far too important a country to drift along as South Vietnam did in the 1960s after its own military coup.”

How about Fox News favorite neoconservative, former UN ambassador John Bolton, a man who hasn’t seen an intervention he doesn’t like?

On a Fox News program, Bolton urged President Obama to keep U.S. aid “flowing” to Egypt’s military…

Update: After this article was published, neoconservative Charles Krauthammer said on Fox News Special Report with Bret Baier that “John McCain got it wrong” concerning aid to Egypt. Another neocon…check.

Toward the end of her “column”, Rubin takes a big jab at Paul basically saying that Obama has a better grasp on foreign policy. Her examples are “even the president understands the need for such counterterrorism tactics as drones and NSA surveillance”.

Hey Jennifer, you just proved my point. I would say Sen. Paul knows what a neoconservative is, strangely, you seem unsure of your own ilk.

Speaking of neocons, this is one of the best 5 minute explanations.

    Rubin should take notes.
