James Wan gives an update on ‘Aquaman’ trailer, new featurette previews Jason Momoa as the King of Atlantis

Despite rumors, director James Wan has gone on record that an Aquaman trailer has not been held back due to re-shoots, but due to his own insistence on excellence for the Warner Bros. event film. Fans can get a holdover by watching a featurette from the Justice League Blu-Ray.

The featurette is introduced by Cyborg Ray Fisher who points out the Justice League movie Aquaman looks differeent than the comic book version.

“Over the course of 75 years, Aquaman has evolved from underrated and underestimated to one of the most beloved superheroes of the DC canon,” Fisher said.

The Aquaman featurette footage features interviews with Justice League producer Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns, and star Jason Momoa as well as behind-the-scenes footage from the movie, images from the comics and more.

From Wan on the trailer delay: “Hey friends, I usually do my best to avoid internet noises (especially fabricated distractions) but a teaser-trailer going out this weekend was never in the books — despite what some claim. It’s not because of anyone or any nefarious reason holding it back — IT’S ME…”

Wan tweeted. “I am simply not ready yet to share. This movie is filled to the gills with VFX, and the process is as slow and laborious as a sea-slug! Yes, even shots for the trailers take forever to do, and I refuse to put out anything that might be construed as subpar. I know it seems like nothing much is brewing above the surface, but I can assure you, we’re working nonstop under the waves. (Ps: And yes, I plan to use oceanic puns/references every chance I get).”

On the reshoot rumors, Dolph Lundgren confirmed on his social channels confirmation that he did recently return to do additional photography as his character King Nereus (via Reddit).

The Get Down actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast in the role of villain Black Manta with Amber Heard as Mera and Willem DaFoe as Vulko.

Patrick Wilson is Aquaman’s super-villain half brother Orm, The Ocean Master, Temuera Morrison has been cast as Thomas Curry: Arthur Curry’s father with Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna: Arthur Curry’s mother, and former queen of Atlantis.

Lundgren has joined the film as Nereus: King of the undersea nation of Xebel. Michael Beach (Third Watch) will play Jesse Kane, part of a group of high-seas hijackers who has a fateful interaction with Aquaman

Wan helms from a script by Will Beall, Geoff Johns and Wan.

Aquaman opens on December 21, 2018 in theaters.
