James Cameron now claims there will be four ‘Avatar’ sequels over the next few years
From the 20th Century Fox panel at CinemaCon, director James Cameron updated fans on the upcoming Avatar sequels, revealing that instead of the previously-reported three movies, there will now be four sequels.
Cameron confirmed that each of the sequels are designed to stand on their own as individual stories, but will “form a complete saga” together.
After many delays. the first Avatar sequel is set to arrive in December 2018, the second in 2020, the third in 2022, and the final one in 2023. Production on Avatar 2 is set to begin in New Zealand, and was previously reported to begin this month.
Avatar 2 will include the return of cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver and will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment.
The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.
Avatar tops the all-time box office list with $2.782 billion at the worldwide box office. It was recently dethroned by Star Wars: The Force Awakens for reigning domestic box office champion with a total of $935 million to Avatar‘s $749 million.
