Jacksonville shooting: 4 dead, 11 injured at Madden 19 video game tournament
Four people have been killed and 11 are being treated after a mass shooting at a Madden 19 video game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida. The shooter committed suicide after shooting the others, according to a fellow gamer.
Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams confirmed that there was only one suspect. “We have no outstanding suspects at this time. No outstanding suspects,” he said. “We have one suspect in this case. He is deceased at the scene.”
The suspect was identified as a white male, but no name was given.
The shooter was a participant of the tournament who lost, according to Steven “Steveyj” Javaruski, another competitor, speaking to the L.A. Times. The shooter “targeted a few people” and shot at least five victims before killing himself, Javaruski told The Times.
“I am literally so lucky,” gamer Drini Gjoka said in a tweet. “The bullet hit my thumb.”
He added: “Worst day of my life.”
The Sheriff’s Department tweeted that “we are finding many people hiding in locked areas at The Landing,” asking those individuals to “stay calm” and “remain hidden…we will get to you, please don’t come running out.”
The shooting took place at Jacksonville Landing, an entertainment complex on the St. Johns River which includes waterfront restaurants and an indoor shopping mall.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for EA said, “We are aware of an incident at a sanctioned Madden Championship Series competition in Jacksonville. We are working with authorities to gather facts at this stage. This is a horrible situation, and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved.”
Florida Governor Rick Scott tweeted that the state has offered the Jacksonville police any resources they may need.
