The conflict in the Middle East continues to worsen with a Tuesday video depicting an IS member beheading journalist James Foley as they threaten the life of another reporter who they have as a prisoner.Islamic State militants have now turned Twiter to threaten the United States with the group’s power.

The Twitter photos began in June with an ISIS supporter in front of the Old Republic Building in Chicago with a threat that “Soldiers of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria will pass from here soon.” In August, the social media site was stirred when the Islamic State flag held in front of the White House with the caption, “We are in your state. We are in your cities. We are in your streets.”

Tuesday’s video, titled “A Message To America,” presented President Obama difficult decisions for America’s next phase of involvement in Iraq and the public reaction to it. Obama held back from making a public statement about the beheading until the video could be formally authenticated.

“If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.

The other reporter, Steven Sotloff, appeared at the end of the video, went missing in northern Syria while reporting in July 2013. He has written for TIME among other news organizations. Foley, 40, was kidnapped by armed men on Nov. 22, 2012, in northern Syria while on his way to the Turkish border, according to GlobalPost, a Boston-based online publication where Foley had worked as a freelancer.

The Sunni militant group, which has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria in areas it controls, opened the video with a clip of Obama saying he had authorized strikes in Iraq.

The words “Obama authorizes military operations against the Islamic State effectively placing America upon a slippery slope towards a new war front against Muslims” appeared in English and Arabic on the screen.

It showed black and white aerial footage of air strikes with text saying “American aggression against the Islamic State”.

The Secret Service is taking the potential security breach in America seriously as the social media threats continue.
“We have an intelligence division whose mission is to assess information that we receive every day for dangerousness or potential threat level. We are aware of the image and will take the necessary and appropriate follow-up steps,” said Ed Donovan, Secret Service spokesman.
