Islamic extremists attach school dorm, murder 29, tell females to home and abandon education

At least 29 students are dead after an Islamic extremists group set fire to a school dormitory Tuesday, the spokesman for the governor of Nigeria’s Yobe state told The Associated Press.

The murderers locked the doors of the building and then set it on fire. Any student who climbed out the windows to escape had their throat slit or were gunned down while running away, reported a teacher Adamu Garba.

Garba added that most were burned alive.

Spokesman Abdullahi Bego detailed that the female students were spared the attack, told to go home and “get married…to abandon the Western education” saying it was “anathema to Islam.”

“The community complained to the governor that yesterday the military were withdrawn and then the attack happened,” Bego said.

He said authorities didn’t arrive until midday, ten hours after the attack and the bodies were already being buried. The victims were between 15 and 20-years-old.

A group of about eight soldiers manned the checkpoint when an AP reporter visited recently, the article stated.

Nigeria’s military has reported arresting several soldiers accused of aiding and passing information to extremists of the terrorist network of Boko Haram — the nickname means “Western education is forbidden.”
