Iran judges tell Christians Saheb Fadaie and Fatemeh Bakhteri to renounce their faith

(International Christian Concern) –Iranian judges Hassan Babaee and Ahmad Zargar presided over the January 15th final appeal hearing for Christians Saheb Fadaie and Fatemeh Bakhteri. These two judges asked the Christians to renounce their faith. When they refused, the judges said that they should soon expect a verdict in their appeal against the charges of “spreading propaganda against the regime.”

Both judges have a long record of human rights abuses, particularly in regards to the freedom of expression. In regards to Christian persecution, both Judge Babaee and Judge Zargar have a history of upholding the criminal charges laid against Christians. This stands in direct contrast to the Iranian Constitution, which alleges to protect the rights of Christians to practice their faith. However, because the regime views itself as the Islamic Republic, Christianity is viewed as a national security threat.

Iran is rated a Tier 1 Country of Particular Concern by the United States Commission on Religious Freedom. Open Doors 2019 World Watch List rates Iran number 9, as a country with extremely high persecution. Iran rated as number 10 last year, demonstrating how the country is worsening its persecution of Christians.
