Influenza activity is increasing in many European countries: ECDC

Influenza activity is increasing in many European countries, although the epidemic may have passed its peak in some countries, mostly in north-western Europe, according to a European Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) Surveillance report released Feb. 1.

For the last week of January, two-thirds of the 29 European countries reporting have indicated medium-intensity transmission, wide geographic spread and increasing trends in a range of combinations.

Since week 40 of 2012, virologic surveillance of the influenza shows an even distribution of influenza virus types, 50% each for type A and type B viruses. This is a different pattern than what is being seen in North America where A(H3) viruses are dominant.
