Indonesia reports 194th human H5N1 bird flu case since 2005

A 28-year-old Bekasi, West Java  man is the latest person to have been confirmed positive for H5N1 avian influenza in Indonesia, according to Indonesian Health Ministry news release (computer translated).

According to the release, the case history is as follows:

On 16 September 2013 starting symptoms of fever, aches and back pain. Then, on 18 September 2013, the case of outpatient treatment to one of the private hospitals in Bekasi. But because there is no change, the case back for treatment and was admitted to the hospital on 20 September 2013.

In hospital care, the rising fever accompanied by cough and shortness. On 25 September 2013 the disease more severe cases, fever and increasingly crowded conditions, and cases in intensive care in the ICU. The next day on 26 September 2013 in the morning, suspected cases of suspected bird flu. Subsequently, the case was referred to the Friendship Hospital for treatment on 27 September 2013. However, the case died at about 20:10 pm on the same day.

According to the epidemiological investigation, exposure to pigeons may have been a risk factor.

Since 2005, Indonesia has reported 194 cases of H5N1 avian influenza with 162 resulting in death.
