Illinois: College student Jabari Dean arrested after threatening to kill white students and staff

An engineering student at the University of Illinois in Chicago has been taken into federal custody after allegedly threatening to murder white students and staff at the school as well as white first responders in retaliation for the death of a man shot by police.

Jabari R. Dean, 21, was federally charged with making a credible threat to injure another person. Dean admitted to making comments asserting his desire to “execute approximately 16 white male students and or staff” and “any number of white policemen that I can in the process” on the worldstarhiphop.com website Sunday, according to the Chicago Tribune.

He went on to confess that he deleted the comment after he was shown a screenshot of the threat, an FBI agent wrote in a criminal complaint.

University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer took the threats seriously and canceled all classes and activities Monday, warn campus staff, faculty and students “to remain indoors as much as possible” citing an unexplained threat.

“Based on the FBI’s assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday,” Zimmer said in an email.

Classes are scheduled to resume Tuesday.

Dean is charged with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, according to a press release from the US Justice Department.
