How to Combat Work Related Stress

Workplace stress will impact all of us, no matter how much we enjoy our jobs. The happiest of people can become stressed and overwhelmed at times, however, this common consensus doesn’t mean we’re educated on how to reduce our feelings of stress. Rather, we’re left feeling angry, overworked and unhappy. If you’re prone to becoming stressed or are currently so, here’s how to combat any feelings of stress you may be currently experiencing.

Take a Deep Breath

Whenever you feel overwhelmed at work, you should take a break for a few minutes to focus on deep breathing. Inhale for five seconds, hold, and then exhale for five seconds through your nose. It can help to calm you down, which is an effective tactic before delivering a pitch or after coming out of a tense meeting. If you’re worried about doing this in front of people, take five in the bathroom to practice your breathing.

Reduce Interruptions

Constant interruptions are not only frustrating, but they could stand in the way of you completing a task on schedule, which can cause your stress levels to rise. If you have an urgent deadline, you must aim to reduce interruptions as much as possible throughout the working day. While it might be difficult to stop colleagues from interrupting you, you can take control of your response. You could close your door or better yet, tell your coworkers that you have a deadline and should only be contacted in case of an emergency.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

An unhealthy diet can stress your system. If you want to feel happier and healthier, you should aim to eat a high-protein, low sugar diet. You must also strive to enjoy plenty of sleep each night, so you wake feeling energetic and optimistic. Yet despite its many benefits, approximately 60 million Americans are failing to enjoy enough sleep each night, which can lead to irritability and fatigue, and can exacerbate stress. If you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep every night, consult your doctor to find the best solution to the problem.

Talk to a Therapist

If stress at work is eating into your personal life, you need to take action to resolve the issue, so that you can separate your career from your home life. Combat work-related stress by talking to a trained therapist, who will carefully listen to you in a non-judgmental environment. Stop Seeking Approval

Many people can often get caught up in other people’s perceptions of them, which can make them feel stressed, anxious, or unconfident. Rather than seeking other people’s approval, such as your manager or company CEO, you must aim to build up your self-confidence, so you will not allow others’ thoughts or actions to impact your personal happiness, productivity, and self-esteem. You can then focus more time on your work, rather than other people’s perceptions of your work, so you will be more likely to impress them.

Prioritize Tasks

A lack of organization can lead to unwanted stress. If you’re regularly up against tight deadlines, or have projects piling up, you must prioritize your task list. To do so, identify the company’s annual target, your personal strengths, and the department goals, so that you can tick the most important projects off your to-do list first.
