Business is a highly popular sector for many young people to go into and the pinnacle of this industry is to go on to become a successful business leader. In order to explore what it takes to become a successful leader in the world of business, we have teamed up with Sun Capital Partners co-founder Marc Leder to find out a little bit more about the make-up of the very best business leaders. Let’s take a look at Marc’s life and career and then what you need to possess if you want to be a successful business leader.

Marc Leder

Born in Long Island in 1962, Marc graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Marc’s first job was pretty high profile, working as a junior analysts for Lehman Brothers in New York. Following this start at the company, Leder went on to become Senior Vice President of the company before looking to branch out on his own. Leder’s company Sun Capital Partners. Inc, which he formed with colleague and friend Roger Krause specializes in private equity investments and the company has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1995.

Forward Thinking

Marc puts much of his success as a business leader down to his forward thinking nature and his desire to always look for the next opportunity or the next gap in the market. This is a trait which many business leaders possess and if you want to become a leader one day, you too need to have this characteristic.


Without passion you won’t achieve anything and this is as true in leadership as it is in every other walk of life. Part of being a leader is bringing people with you and without passion you will never be able to do that.

Communication Skills

Marc notes just how important communication skills are in a leader and this extends to listening as well as talking. Understand who you should be listening to and when and being able to land your message with clarity are both key characteristics that all great leaders possess.


As a leader, you must be able to inspire those around you to work to the best of their ability and reach their goals. One of the greatest challenges to leaders who are looking to inspire those around them, is being able to understand what makes each person tick, and how to best inspire them. There is no one rule for all here and the very best leaders understand how to get each member of their time running on all cylinders.


The review process of any task or project is absolutely vital and a great leader understands just how important this is. It is during the review stage that you can see what has gone well, what needs improving and what went wrong, and how to fix it. If you want to be a great leader, you need to understand the importance of the review process.
