‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9 will see John Lithgow returning as Barney’s dad
John Lithgow is returning to How I Met Your Mother. The actor will be reprising his role of Barney Stinson’s (Neil Patrick Harris) father Jerry Whitaker for at least one episode.
Lithgow’s guest appearance will come as part of Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney’s wedding storyline.
The Emmy-winning actor previously appeared in How I Met Your Mother twice in 2011.
“Everyone is heading off to this wedding, and we sort of have this new framework,” co-creator Carter Bays recently said of the final season’s format, which will see much of the action playing out over the course of just three days. “We want to stress the word ‘framework,’ because we don’t want people to think there [will be] four hours of flower arranging. We’re always going to be flashing back and flashing forward. Decades will span over the course of this weekend.”
How I Met Your Mother has lined up several high-profile guest stars for its final season, including Sherri Shepherd and Wayne Brady. Former Office cast member Ellie Kemper is joining the sitcom as well.
How I Met Your Mother‘s final season premieres Monday, September. 23, with a one-hour episode.
