Haiti health minister reports on 14 chikungunya cases, an additional 67 cases suspected

The Haitian Health Minister announced today that they have diagnosed the mosquito borne viral disease, chikungunya, in more than one dozen people from  several towns of the south and west of Haiti this week.

Health Minister Florence Guillaume Duperval said on Radio Metropole14 cases have been diagnosed in Leogane, Carrefour, Delmas, Petion Ville, Tabarre, Croix des Bouquets and Coteaux. The number of suspected cases is 67, according to head of epidemiology MSPP, Nathanael Fenelus. 

Duperval urged citizens to be vigilant while recalling that this fever is not life threatening. The government has announced steps to reduce the spread of chikungunya virus in the country, which includes eliminating mosquito breeding spots. Health officials say despite the fact that there  is no direct treatment for this viral disease, doctors recommend consuming  a large amount of water, rest and eat well. In addition, they advocate the use of paracetamol to reduce pain.
