Hacker group Anonymous takes on ISIS, releasing twitter, Facebook and email details

Hacker group Anonymous is fighting back at the Islamic State by releasing details of 9,200 Twitter accounts belonging to the terrorist group’s supporters. Joined by other “hacker groups” GhostSec and Ctrlsec previously targeted 800 Twitter accounts, 12 Facebook accounts and 50 emails linked to ISIS.

“You will be treated like a virus, and we are the cure. We own the Internet,” Anonymous said.

While Facebook was quick to take down 11 of the 12 sites reported by the group, Twitter did not immediately respond.

“The more attention it gets the more likely it becomes Twitter takes action in removing these accounts and making a serious impact on the ability of ISIS to spread propaganda and recruit new members,” the group said on Medium.

“I encourage you all to do your duty not only as a citizen of the world but also as a member of the Internet community and re-post this on social media,” they added.

Anonymous said that “netizens” need not be tech savvy to support their campaign and a simple retweet would be enough to make these nearly 10,000 active accounts lose their power to do more damage and advance ISIS propaganda.

This is not the first time the hacktivist group waged war on ISIS.

Last month, it released a video on its website, vowing to weed out and unmask ISIS members who are using the Internet as a tool for their propaganda and scare tactics.

In January, the group also declared war against jihadist terrorists after the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris where 12 journalists were killed by Islamic terrorists.

“You will not impose your Sharia law in our democracies, we will not let your stupidity kill our liberties and our freedom of expression,” the group declared. “We have warned you; expect your destruction,” it warned.
