H5N1 avian influenza: Cambodia reports first fatality of 2014
Just a week after reporting their first case of human H5N1 avian influenza (AI) in a five-year-old boy from Kampong Thom province, health officials have confirmed another case of the virus and this one was fatal, according to an Associated Press report today.

The victim, an eight-year-old boy from the eastern province of Kratie died last Friday. His two-year-old sister also died; however, her case was not confirmed at this point.
It is reported the sibling came into contact with poultry prior to getting sick.
This case represents the 49th human H5N1 avian influenza case in Cambodia since the first case was seen in 2005.
Last year was a huge year for H5N1 AI in the Southeast Asian Kingdom, which recorded 26 cases of human H5N1 AI in 2013, accounting for 68% of all recorded cases last year.
