Guiyang, China man is second human bird flu death of 2013
In a follow-up from a story earlier this month, Chinese health authorities report the second fatality due to avian influenza, or bird flu of the year, according to a Voice of America report Saturday.
In this case, a 31-year-old man from the south-central Chinese city of Guiyang, died of organ failure Friday. It is reported that the man had close contact with birds prior to contracted the illness.
This is the same city where a 21-year-old woman succumbed to the lethal virus about 10 days ago.
Health officials say 110 people who had been exposed to the victims had been released from quarantine.
According to the WHO, the primary risk factor for human infection with the virus appears to be direct or indirect exposure to infected live or dead poultry or contaminated environments.
They go on to say there is no evidence to suggest that the H5N1 virus can be transmitted to humans through properly prepared poultry or eggs. A few human cases have been linked to consumption of dishes made of raw, contaminated poultry blood. However, slaughter, defeathering, handling carcasses of infected poultry, and preparing poultry for consumption, especially in household settings, are likely to be risk factors.
