Graphic Novel Review: ‘Messiah: Origin’ puts Jesus’ life into images
Origin is the first adventure in the Messiah graphic novel series translated exclusively from ancient Gospel manuscripts, translated by Mark Arey, who took the words directly from ancient texts, and aligned them in a timeline that is based on the timeline in the book of John.
Messiah: Origin follows the key event leading up and surrounding the birth of Jesus, including the annunciation of John the Baptist.
Lucasfilm award winner Kai Carpenter illustrated the graphic novel with Matt Dorff creating the layout like a film.
Origin sets itself up as a great supplement for teaching on the life of Jesus, especially teens and young people. The inclusion of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist and Zacharias’ disbelief are two real supplements that can be omitted through general teachings.
Vital Shift is a new initiative to bring quality products that have a faith component to Graphic Novels and transmedia products. Showcased at the 2 major Comic Cons in 2013, the books and the concept has met very positive response. Last year Zondervan released The Book of Revelation with great consumer response, and now that is under the Vital Shift label.
Chip Brown, the Sr. VP of Zondervan, explained how the graphic novel popularity is key to this generation.
“I think they are sort of the stained glass for this century. I mean it’s visual storytelling that takes panels, unpacks scripture in a way that transcends language.”
Origin may not be for the casual comic book reader, but adds great images to elaborate on scripture and can cement the meaning behind the passages.
