‘Gotham’ gets news teasers, preview and casts ‘Dexter’ star David Zayas
Batman fans are excited about the transition to the new TV series Gotham, a prequel to the universe made famous in DC Comics. A set of new teasers/featurettes take fans behind the show, the setting of the show and how the villains will be handled. There also have been some casting news announced Friday.
One of Gotham’s most feared crime bosses, Sal Maroni, head of the Maroni crime family, has joined the roster of Fox’s Batman prequel being played by David Zayas. Zayas famously played Det. Angel Batista on all of the seasons of Showtime’s hit show Dexter. He is also known for the memorable role as General Garza, the foil in 2010’s The Expendables.
Set in a pre-Batman universe, Gotham follows Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), who who is paired up with Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), a rough cop, who faces a long battle to fight in his dedication to uphold justice — which will continue to unfold in the weeks to come.
The murder of the Wayne is the straw that breaks the back of Gotham and starts the downward spiral to a place where the masked vigilante is needed.
“That was the beginning of the thing, and everything followed from there,” creator Bruno Heller affirmed during his SDCC talk.
Camren Bicondovaas the young Selina Kyle (Catwoman). Robin Taylor is the incarnation of Oswald Cobblepot and Cory Michael Smith will play Edward Nigma.
The series also stars Zabryna Guevara, Erin Richards, David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), and Jada Pinkett Smith.
“All I can say is that, you know, as an actor, you just want to get the best material possible. When I come to set and we look at what we’re doing for the day, and I see what’s been written…” Taylor said about the experience and then added about his inspiration for his character, “I see what’s been created and it’s all just there in front of me, I feel like I’m just stepping into something amazing.
“I feel like it’s a vessel that I’m filling,” he continued. “For inspiration, I don’t know — it’s just a dream come true.”
“I’m excited about everything. She’s (Selina Kyle) really mysterious and you don’t really know what she’s thinking all the time, or whether she’s thinking anything at all,” Bicondovaas said, going on to add, “She’s a cat lover and I’m a cat lover. I feel like we could be best friends.”
Gotham premieres on Fox this fall, airing on Mondays 8 p.m. ET.
