GM issues massive recall of 475K Chevy Cruze over risk of fire

GM announced it is recalling 475,418 of its popular compact Chevrolet Cruze sedans to modify the under-engine shield so flammable liquids are not trapped in the engine compartment, the automaker said on Friday.

Forbes reports that the latest GM recall covers 413,418 Cruzes sold in the United States during the 2011 and 2012 model years and another 60,000 sold in Canada. All the affected cars were built at GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio, from the start of production in 2010 through this past May.

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration have been looking into reports that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and 2010 Jeep Wrangler are suffering engine fires. The investigations revealed that both Chevy and Jeep say there have been no reports of injuries or deaths due to possible defects.

“The car was totally engulfed within five minutes of stopping, and it was only after the first sign of fire was visible that the warning light on the dashboard illuminated,” the driver told NHTSA. NHTSA doesn’t post drivers’ identifications on its site.

According to the AP, two Cruze owners reported car-totalling fires. Eight Wrangler owners reported engine fires, four of which destroyed the cars.

Owners will begin getting recall notices in mid-July. A fix of the problem will take about a half hour at a Chevrolet dealership, GM said.
