Global MERS outbreak reaches 70 cases as Saudi Arabia reports two more cases
The global count in the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreak has reached 70 laboratory confirmed cases after the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health notified the World Health Organization (WHO) of two additional cases Sunday.
One case is a 41 year-old female from Riyadh who had contact with a confirmed case. The other case is a 32 year-old male from the Eastern Region with underlying medical conditions who is in critical condition.
In addition, the MoH has announced the death of a previously reported confirmed case from the Eastern Region who had been admitted to hospital on 26 April 2013.
The total death count linked to MERS-CoV now stands at 39.
Saudi Arabia has accounted for 55 (78%) of the confirmed cases and 33 (85%) of the total fatalities.
