Getting Wise About Whiplash: 5 Things to Know About Whiplash from a Car Accident

It might surprise you to know that there are roughly 6,000,000 car accidents in this country per year. Add to that the 3,000,000 individuals expected to sustain injuries in a car accident each year, and you may go from surprised to slightly alarmed.

One of the injuries commonly experienced during a car accident is whiplash. These happen often in an accident where an individual is rear-ended. For those not familiar, whiplash is a type of neck strain triggered by any impact that causes a person to jerk his/her head backward or forward. Symptoms usually include neck pain or stiffness, decreased motion in the neck, and headaches.

If you ever find yourself in a car accident and experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, there are important things you’ll want to know to protect your health and wealth going forward. Keep reading to learn what you should know if you ever get into a whiplash car accident.

1. How to Prevent Whiplash?

While there is no foolproof way to prevent a whiplash injury, there are certain steps you can take to better ensure your safety. For example, put your seat belt on every time you go for a car ride and make sure your headrests don’t sit too low below the neck. Also, don’t have your car seat in an overly reclined position.

2. Go to a Doctor after a Whiplash Car Accident

Are you one of those people that are always reluctant to seek the help of a medical professional? Don’t be one of those individuals after an accident. If you think you’re experiencing symptoms of whiplash, you’ll want to get checked out right away to make sure you don’t have long-lasting complications.

Additionally, keep in mind that symptoms of whiplash don’t always present themselves immediately. On occasion, it may take days for you to start to feel neck pain or stiffness. But even days later, it’s critical you go see a physician.

3. Being Active Actually Helps

As ironic as it may sound, you don’t want to put yourself on bed rest too much with a whiplash injury. Immobilizing yourself could increase the stiffness in your neck. Instead, light physical activity can reduce neck strain and improve posture.

Please keep in mind, you’ll want to consult your physician as to what activities you should do and how often you should do them.

4. Seek out Legal Assistance

Sometimes treating a whiplash injury can be a bit expensive. You don’t want to pay large medical bills if you’re not responsible for the accident. If you don’t have anyone you can turn to for legal advice after a car accident, make sure you reach out to the Mastrangelo Law Offices.

5. Treatment

There are a few options to choose from in terms of treatment. For example, you can use a neck brace for a brief time depending on the severity of the neck injury. Also, you can take pain management medications to alleviate pain, inflammation, or muscle spasms.

Physical therapists and chiropractors can also provide pain relief and help restore range of motion through their massage and stretching techniques.
