‘Gangnam Style’ beats out Kony and ‘Call Me Maybe’ as YouTube’s biggest 2012 video
YouTube top 10 countdown of their biggest videos of 2012 landed late Tuesday and the South Korean musician PSY came out on top with the K-Pop style “Gangnam Style.”
The phrase “Gangnam Style” is a Korean neologism that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul. The song and its accompanying music video went viral in August 2012 and have influenced popular culture since then.
The Korean rapper garnered nearly a billion views and easily beat out “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Walk Off the Earth for the top spot.
A half-hour documentary on the Uganda warlord Kony, “Kony 2012,” created by Invisible Children, Inc landed in the number three slot. The short film has over 95 million views on YouTube bringing awareness to the “Stop Kony” campaign.
“Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen featured a ton of star power with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale to land at #4 with over 55 million views.
The election rap parody between Mitt Romney and President Obama rounded out the Top 5.
