“It really means that this is a movie that has a talking raccoon in it, and it’s very important that it is not the Avengers with Bugs Bunny in the center of it. It’s really important that Rocket is a real creature, and I love him, and he is the heart of the movie. He’s the most representative of the Guardians in that he is this mangled beast that was taken and experimented on and torn apart and put back together, and we have to feel that character’s soul. If we feel that character’s soul and we know him and we love him, we see his plight and see why he is such an angry little guy, then the movie will work.”

Gunn has been open about Pratt not being his choice as Star-Lord.

I didn’t want to see Chris because I didn’t think he was right for the role – I knew him a little bit from Moneyball and I knew him as the chunky guy in Parks and Rec. it seemed ridiculous to see Chris Pratt…but he read and about 20 seconds into it I knew he was the guy.”

He goes on to praise Karen Gillan’s audition and explain how the Guardians fit in the MCU.

Here’s the official synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
