Fourth State Insurance Agency Warns Consumers Against Unacceptable Insurance Gaps Involved in ‘Ridesharing’

PRESS RELEASE: Minnesota’s department of insurance recently became the fourth state insurance agency to warn consumers about coverage gaps involved in ‘ridesharing’—joining California, Ohio and Nebraska.

“The lack of adequate insurance coverage exposes TNC drivers, their customers and other drivers on the Minnesota roads to unacceptable gaps of insurance coverage,” wrote Tim Vande Hey, Deputy Commissioner for the insurance division of Minnesota’s Department of Commerce.  “Rather than attempting to supplement the driver’s personal auto coverage, Commerce recommends that the TNC obtain a commercial auto policy that provides first dollar coverage adequate for the needs of their drivers and customers.”

Minnesota’s insurance experts join those in California, Ohio and Nebraska warning consumers and drivers that the insurance provided by so-called ‘ridesharing’ companies, such as Uber, Lyft and Sidecar, is dangerous and inadequate for ‘ridesharing’ passengers, drivers, drivers of other vehicles and pedestrians.

“The issue of whether ‘ridesharing’ companies’ insurance is safe has played out like ‘he-said, she-said’ in the media. We have repeatedly warned about the dangers of ‘ridesharing’ insurance, and the companies respond with their marketing doublespeak,” said Dave Sutton, spokesperson for Who’s Driving You? “These state agency warnings have been issued by insurance experts. With each successive advisory, the message grows louder and clearer: The insurance coverage provided by ‘ridesharing’ companies is unsafe. Private insurance does not cover someone driving commercially. What’s required for safety is commercial auto insurance that provides primary coverage for ‘ridesharing’ drivers and their passengers.”
