Former Miss Indonesia and politician, Angelina Sondakh, convicted of graft, gets 4 1/2 years
Former beauty queen and Democratic Party politician, Angelina Sondakh was convicted Thursday of graft and sentenced by an Indonesian court to 4 1/2 years in prison, according to an Associated Press report Jan. 10.
Sondakh was convicted of accepting kickbacks of $3.6 million from a company commissioned to build accommodation for athletes for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games.
The four and one-half sentence is much less than prosecutors were seeking. Last month, prosecutors demanded 12 years’ imprisonment and a Rp 500 million fine for her part in a Youth and Sports Ministry bribery scandal.
According to the Jakarta Post in December, Sondakh received $3.6 million in kickbacks Permai Group, a holding company belonging to former Democratic Party treasurer M. Nazaruddin, which won the tender to build Jakabaring Athletes’ Village in Palembang, South Sumatra.
According to the AP report, Sondakh denies any wrongdoing and is considering an appeal.
