Florida releases Vibrio vulnificus informational video as state reports 27 cases

In light of all the publicity surrounding the Vibrio vulnificus cases and fatalities across the Sunshine State, the Florida Department of Health has released an informational video on the bacterium, which features State Public Health Veterinarian and Interim State Epidemiologist, Dr. Carina Blackmore.

This comes after the Department of Health has reported 27 cases and nine deaths due to V. vulnificus. This number is up one case since first reported here on Sept. 29.

In the video, Dr. Blackmore answers the questions, “What is Vibrio vulnificus and where can it be found?”, “How would a person get infected?”, “What type of illness does V. vulnificus cause?” and numerous others the public may have.

According to the latest data from the Florida Department of Health, the following counties have reported cases of V. vulnificus (second number is number of deaths, if applicable).

Brevard (2), Broward (4) (2), Duval (1), Flagler (1) (1), Glades (1) (1), Hernando (1), Hillsborough (3), Lee (1) (1), Leon (1) (1), Manatee (2), Marion (1), Monroe (1) (1), Nassau (1), Okaloosa (1) (1), Pinellas (1), St. Johns (1), Suwannee (1), Volusia (2) and Walton (1) (1).

Since 2008, the state of Florida has reported the following breakdown of cases of V. vulnificus: 2008 = 15 cases, 5 deaths; 2009 = 24 cases, 7 deaths; 2010 = 32 cases, 10 deaths; 2011 = 35 cases, 13 deaths; 2012 = 27 cases, 9 deaths and 2013 = so far 27 cases, 9 deaths.
