First ‘Star Trek Beyond’ trailer, first look at Sofia Boutella, Idris Elba villains

Paramount attempts to make their mark ahead of the big Star Wars weekend, as the studio dropped the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond, the third installment in the rebooted sci-fi franchise and the first one not directed by J.J. Abrams, replaced by Justin Lin. Check out the video below.

Reprising their roles in the first two films is Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu, and Karl Urban as Bones. Sofia Boutella joins Beyond as a new alien character with Luther star Idris Elba cast as a new alien villain.

Elba’s role is a character called Krall.

We got this noted that “he bears somewhat of a resemblance to the Jem’Hadar: the genetically engineered warrior race from the Gamma Quadrant that were introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

Lin is coming off of four straight Fast and Furious movies, so expect a ton of action and great special effects.

Set against Sabotage by the Beastie Boys, a link back to the first Trek rebooted film, the trailer feels like Fast and the Furious in space, but with a ton of emphasis on Scotty rather than the Kirk or Spock.

The script comes from Roberto Orci, John D. Payne, Patrick McKay with work done by Douglas Jung and Simon Pegg.

Star Trek Beyond arrives in theaters on July 22, 2016
