First ‘Hellboy’ trailer reveals the R-rated reboot with David Harbour, who says it’s not an ‘origin story’
Summit Entertainment has released the first Hellboy trailer for the upcoming reboot which stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) as the titular demon. Check out the footage below and the new photos as well.
The new film is from a screenplay co-written by Hellboy comics creator Mike Mignola, with The Descent filmmaker Neil Marshall at the helm.
Ian McShane (Deadwood) stars as Hellboy’s adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm, who also happens to be the founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. This new film also introduces Daniel Dae Kim as comics character Ben Daimio, with Milla Jovovich playing Nimue, a medieval British sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind. She is also known as the Blood Queen.
Harbour tells EW: “It’s not an origin story, but it’s his coming to terms with where he came from,” says Harbour. “He’s been Hellboy for a long time, but there’s a new turn of events at the start of the film, where people start to bring up the fact that he might bring about the end of the world, and it’s really the first time he’s heard anything like that. The question that comes up in the movie is where does he really belong?”
On the Blood Queen, he says: “We really three-dimensionalized her in the movie,” Harbour says. “She was brought up in a culture that treated her kind a certain way, and it wasn’t always deserving. That’s the point that becomes compelling to Hellboy and spins his head around.”
Hellboy also stars Sasha Lane (American Honey) as Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell (The Vampire Diaries) as Ganeida, Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) as Lady Hatton, Brian Gleeson (mother!, 28 Days Later) as Merlin, and Alistair Petrie (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Lord Adam Glaren.
Hellboy opens in theaters on April 12, 2019.
