Filipino journalist, Julius Cauzo, gunned down in Cabanatuan City
A Special Investigation Task Group was activated to lead the investigation into the killing of a 51-year-old broadcaster in Nueva Ecija early Thursday, according to an Inquirer report Thursday.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) say 51-year-old radio reporter-broadcaster, Julius Cauzo was riding his motorcycle this morning when an unidentified gunman, also riding a motorcycle, drove behind him and fired shots at him, hitting Cauzo three times in the chest.
He was rushed to the Nueva Ecija Good Samaritan Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Cauzo was an anchorman and reporter of local radio dzJJ. Police have yet to determine a motive into the slaying.
Cauzo’s colleague at DWJJ radio station, Elena Quijano, says he had received death threats but it was unclear why.
The media watchdog Centre for Media Freedom and Responsibility says if his death were found to be work-related, he would be the fourth journalist killed in the Philippines this year.
The NUJP says if the murder is work-related, Cauzo would be the 154th victim of media killings in the line of duty since 1986, the 14th under Pres. Benigno Aquino III’s watch, and the 5th in 2012.
