FEMA Approves $12.6 Million in Florence Aid for North Carolina Agriculture Department

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved $12.6 million to reimburse the North Carolina Department of Agriculture for Hurricane Florence-related expenses.

The Department of Agriculture requested FEMA Public Assistance funding for emergency protective measures. The money will pay part of the cost for the disposal of poultry killed as a result of Hurricane Florence to lessen the potential health threat they posed.

FEMA’s Public Assistance program provides grants to state, local and tribal governments, and to certain types of private nonprofit organizations to reimburse for the cost of debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures and permanent repair work to damaged infrastructure.

The program is an essential source of funding for communities recovering from Hurricane Florence. The State of North Carolina works with FEMA during all phases of the PA program.

FEMA’s Public Assistance is a cost-sharing program which reimburses applicants no less than 75 percent of eligible costs and the remainder is covered by the state. FEMA’s share for this project is more than $9.4 million. The federal portion is paid directly to the state, which disburses funds to the agencies, local governments and nonprofit organizations that incurred costs.
